Add nciku to your MSN buddy list

April 28th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Posted by Dan, Service Manager

Update: The current address of the nciku dictionary robot is nciku7@msn.com

(each MSN account has a maximum of 1000 contacts, so the address new users should add to their MSN account changes from time to time).

If you’re using the Internet Explorer browser and currently signed into MSN, you can add the dictionary robot automatically by clicking here

I mentioned Friday that we would have a new product launch today; it’s an nciku dictionary bot for use on MSN, convenient for quick dictionary searches when you just need the most basic information about a word you don’t recognize. The bot is very handy during work hours, just add nciku as your friend and run your searches through the dictionary bot so you can get the answer you need quickly and efficiently.

You can find it by adding the latest nciku MSN robot account (currently nciku7@msn.com) as your friend and then all you have to do is type in Chinese or English and it will return the details of the highest ranked exact match to your query.

Check it out and tell us what you think!

nciku MSN Dictionary Bot Terms of Service
The nciku MSN dictionary bot service is as follows:
1. A simple dictionary search through the MSN dialogue window.
2. A link to the full dictionary search on nciku.com.
3. An nciku e-zine sent to the email (hereafter: user’s email) used when adding nciku to your MSN buddy list.
4. Necessary notifications regarding a change, suspension, update, or improvement in content, technology, or function will be sent to each user’s email.

If you do not wish to receive the nciku e-zine as stated in item 3, you may unsubscribe with the link provided in the e-zine.

By adding the nciku dictionary bot to their MSN buddy list, each user is assumed to have full knowledge of the above regulations and willingly accepts all services stated above. All users are welcome to visit nciku.com and become a member to take full advantage of the range of services offered.

    Dan,
We have a platform for building bots for Windows Live Messenger that you might find helpful. We are readying a new release of the SDK for Windows Live Agents and that will be publicly available in the next couple of weeks.

Take a look at http://dev.live.com/agents/ for updates.

    ALi,
No need to download it. Just add it to your buddy list. Check Kevin’s comment above if you want to use it on your mobile.

    Kelly,
I’ll pass that along to the messenger bot program head and have him contact you directly.

Is there any chance of an IRC bot version ?

  • 16 Dan
    May 20, 2008 at 9:14 am

We don’t have an IRC bot in the development pipeline and I doubt our development team will build one; but you never know. I’ll pass it along and see what they say.

    Thank you.

I just tested Nciku bot in aMSN, http://www.amsn-project.net/ , since I use Unix instead of Windows.
As I expected, it works fine. I would guess it works equally well in Pidgin (Formerly Gaim) http://www.pidgin.im/ , Adium-X, http://www.adiumx.com/ , and probably on the Java based Mercury Messenger, http://www.mercury.im/ , for Mac OS classic/OSX an others..

Can you guys add the bot for other services like Gtalk and AIM?

  • 19 Dan
    May 20, 2008 at 12:42 pm

That’s more reasonable up our alley than IRC. Right now we are finishing up our QQ bot, then I hope we will move to other platforms.

MSN buddy - Brilliant. I have many Chinese friends and try to mix English with a little pinyin that I know.
Often my friends reply in pinyin and/or with characters and I am lost ..this is brilliant!
    Thanks everyone atnciku

Yeah I use linux, works fine in Pidgeon. Like you say, it should work fine in any service that allows you to talk to your MSN buddies.

    @Pete
Thanks. We’re glad you like it. Good luck with your studies from all of us.

It’s been a month since the launch of MSN robot and the number of buddies of the robot exceeded 1000 yesterday. It seems that many buddies can only see the robot offline even when others can see it alive and can use it. Actually “Flashboy”, the inventer of Quickbot(http://dnreg.org/bot/) already warned that this will happen when the number of buddies reaches 1000.

    May 28, 2008 at 7:20 pm

We are not sure how long the troubleshooting would take so we just created the clone of the robot, . Please try to use if you find its twin brother unconcious. Thank you!

  • 32 Possible Bot Development Suggestion
    Jul 13, 2008 at 3:33 am

It should be possible to modify Pidgin to be your bot, then you could use any IM service for which you could find a plugin for. Just thought I’d throw that idea in.

If you are like me, and the bot is working for everyone else, I figured out the problem. Turns out I added it too early, so I had to delete the contact and then add it again. Works fine now.

Omg, the developers of the bot are absolutely AWESOME. I generally have to keep my nciku window open for constant referral, and my computer being a little old, causes everything to run too slowly. But with the nciku bot on msn, my life just became way easier. I’m a full time student of chinese and this bot is a real blessing! Even my professor loves the site! Great work on the site and everything too.

    Keep up the great work!
