What is the Vocab Test?
The vocab tests let you choose the correct meaning of a word, from 4 possible options. Word lists are based on those provided for standard exams (4 levels of HSK vocab lists for users learning Chinese; CET 4 and 6 for Chinese users learning English). Each of these word lists contain between 1000 and 4000 words; questions are selected randomly so you might occasionally see words that you have already answered. Click here to take the test.
What is the Theme Word Quiz?
As indicated by the name, this is a test based on the nciku theme words. After choosing the category and subject of the words you want to learn, you will be given a Chinese word and 4 pictures with English translations. You should click on the picture or translation that corresponds to the meaning of the Chinese word. Click here to take the test.
What is the Pinyin Test?
This is a way to test yourself on the pronunciation of Chinese words. You will be given a Chinese word, along with its English meaning, and should type the word’s pinyin. Numbers are used to represent tones, and can come either after each character or at the end of the word. Pressing enter or space will submit your answer. The correct tones are not required by default, but if you select the “require correct tones” box at the top of the page and click “Start Test”, your answer will be marked as incorrect if you do not have the correct tones. Click here to take the test.
What are Theme word Flashcards?
This exercise displays a series of flashcards based on the nciku theme words. After choosing a category, subject and settings, the words from a theme word list will be displayed, with the pinyin and meaning being revealed by clicking the appropriate button or pressing the space bar. Click here to view theme words as flashcards.
What does the “Difficulty” of each word mean in the Vocab Test?
A word’s difficulty is based on the proportion of users who got that question right. The higher the proportion of users who correctly answered that question, the lower the difficulty. It is not taken into account when choosing which question to display.
Who are the recent contestants / correct answerers shown in the learning exercises?
The correct answerers in the vocab tests are other users who have already correctly answered this question. The recent contestants on the other learning exercises are the most recent users to get at least one correct answer on that sort of test (but the question is not necessarily the same).
What does the “search” link beside incorrectly answered words do?
Clicking on this link in the vocab test searches for that word in the nciku mini dictionary.
